Overview
The Coyote’s Way is a method of teaching that complements the immersive outdoor experiences we offer our young students. The main role of our guides is to cultivate a child’s natural interest, spark curiosity, and guide organic learning. Our philosophy is a one-on-one, individually tailored curriculum that requires mutual respect, trust and a strong relationship between each guide and mentee.
Observation
Observation is at the core of our curriculum. Teachers are trained to spend time learning about a child’s interests, their knowledge-base and the characteristics that make them unique. Only then can a teacher meet that child where they are to form a successful mentorship relationship.
Open-Ended Inquiry
Following a period of observation each day, the guide will tailor their interactions with each child based on their mood, energy levels, and an understanding of their interests. Guides use open-ended questions to help children think about the world around them. Many of these questions do not ask for a right answer, or any answer at all. They are meant to increase a child’s power of observation and understanding of the world around them.
Stretching the Limitations of Knowledge
The purpose of each open-ended inquiry is to lead a child to the limitations of their knowledge. When a guide is familiar with a child, they can assess which questions will push these limitations without damaging the confidence that each child needs to explore freely and develop trust in their owns skills and abilities. These “stretch-questions” lead a child toward deeper understanding.
